went to the chapel, got married  January 17, 2010 - 3:24 pm

Do you ever think about what kinds of choices you would make if you had to plan a wedding all over again (assuming you are married)? I am always looking at wedding pictures around the internet and thinking, Wow. If I could go back in time and re-plan my wedding, I would totally do this. I’ve always thought of my preferences as classic and timeless, but it’s very interesting how my tastes have changed in just 5(ish) years.

Not that I didn’t like my wedding plans, or that I regret anything we selected. I’m still very, very happy with all of the choices I made and how everything turned out. Wedding planning was not a fun process for me; I remember being so relieved once the wedding was over and done and we could actually just live normally. But in the end, I really did have the wedding of my dreams. It was beautiful! People still tell me how much they enjoyed it, which makes me happy. I wanted my wedding to be a PARTY: music, dancing, food, drinks, fun. It was all of that for me. And I still regard it as one of the best days of my life.

But if I were getting married right now, there are several things I would do differently:

… the photography. Our photographer did an amazing job, and we specifically chose him because his style was classic and he shot medium format FILM. We got fantastic photos. I still treasure those things very much, but times have changed, and I have a better perspective on wedding photography. Digital is so versatile now, and modern on-location photography is so available and affordable. (My BFF Tiffany is a good example – she is part of her own photography business now and does beautiful work! I would have been honored to ask her to shoot my wedding!)

… the dress. Gosh, I *loved* my dress. It was fluffy and beautiful and I felt like a princess. Even so, I think that I would chose something quite different now.

… the colors. Pink was SO me, and it still is. I am very confident that it was the only choice I could have made. But I often dream of beautiful yellows and lilacs and sage greens. Perhaps everybody wearing a different color.

… the time of year. September worked out well for us, and Heaven knows I love the fall, but if I could truly chose any month, I think I would pick April or May. A spring wedding!

Oh, but there are also many things that I would do all over again, exactly the same, not a thing changed:

… the flowers. My flowers were a combination of the classic colors (pearl pink and cream) and modern bouquets (the girls each carried 6 roses; mine included hydrangea). The florist did an amazing job and was one of the best parts of the planning.

… the location. Getting married in the oldest church in Nevada, which just happens to be the church my husband grew up in, was an amazing experience. And the reception location was perfect. I couldn’t have picked anything better.

… the music. I walked down the aisle to Canon in D because I picked that when I was nine years old (no joke!). A lot of people were very surprised by our “classic” choice. But I would do the same again.

… oh yeah, the guy. I think he’s a keeper. ;)

What about you? What sort of wedding would you have in the now?

I’ve thought about the same thing when I’ve seen other wedding pictures. One thing I would change would be the photography. Overall, I was pleased with the pictures we got, but my photographer didn’t even think to take full family pictures, which are shots I really wish I had now. I would keep my dress and the music I picked. I also walked down the aisle to Canon in D. :)

Different? Almost the whole thing. I would do a destination wedding – a simple church ceremony in Europe, and then honeymoon by traveling to different countries over 2-3 weeks – and take up my dad’s offer to give us the money we didn’t use on reception/flowers/photos/etc to use as a down payment on a house. I’d wear a simple, pretty dress (not a wedding dress).

Same? The groom, of course. :) And I’d keep Canon in D for my walk down the aisle, too. It still makes me tear up.

I think about this all the time. So many things went wrong on our wedding day. By the end of the night, everything turned out okay, but by that point I was a stressed out mess. I just wish I’d been able to relax more and enjoy myself.
Also, never using an iPod for reception music again. What a technological mess – we had to improvise our first dance to a completely different song. I would also go much smaller and worry less about pleasing X number of guests.
Things I wouldn’t change – the photography, the groom in an awesome white tux, and my perfect dress.

Your a doll for mentioning me! *HUGZ*
I would actually hire a wedding photographer for my wedding! LOL, its funny to me its the professional I ended up in but we had a friend do ours (he was a good photographer but he wasn’t a professional wedding photographer and there is a difference). I also probably would have opted for a smaller wedding so I could really out do myself on the details! I also would have had my bridesmaids in different colored cocktail dresses :)

oh same here! I would definitely change the photos (our guy was just… okay.) and I wish I had been the size I am now back then- I’m nearly 20 pounds lighter now! That would have changed my dress selection a lot. And I probably would do something different with my hair/veil.

I loved my flowers, and the colors I chose, and the venue. And yes, the man was a good choice too ;)

All that being said, our wedding day was still The Most Fun I’ve Ever Had. Hands down.

well, I think about this all the time because Chuck and I went to court to get married and had a low-key reception at a local hall. Nothing like what most girls imagine their big day to be. We always said that we would renew our vows in a church and have the big wedding. Chuck really wants me to have “my” day.
We are still hoping to do this but at the same time, I would love to get married on the beach somewhere, possibly Hawaii. Someday….oh yes, someday!!!
